I spent three hours recently talking with this guy and visiting this place, which he founded.

More about that later.

Signed Up

Well, I finally got my ass in gear and signed up to be a volunteer fireman in my hometown of Tisbury, Mass-ASS-achoo-sits. Only took me 15 years. But I have an excuse. I thought I was too old, because when I was 33 and tried to sign up in Gardner, Mass, they told me I was too old. Now I'm 55 and Tisbury chief seemed delighted to take my application. He only asked two questions: "You ever drive a big truck?" "You got any problem with ladders?".

My answers, "yup" and "nope", seemed to please him.

How I saved the Ineternets.

Full explanation here

Imagine that!

For an odd, odd reason, I found myself reading something on the vestigial k5 site. There was a review of the new Batman movie that I thought was pretty damn good in some ways. Now, because it's K5, it was actually a troll put up to bait gullible people like me. Only, I wasn't born yestaday and I never comment on k5 anymore, so it didn't work, especially since everybody knows that everything on K5 is a troll. Anyway, I thought a lot of the points it makes are actually good, even though the author disowns them.

Olympics

T'other evening I was riding my bicycle through Oak Bluffs. In a quiet neighborhood, three black teenage boys were walking down the middle of the street.

They were pretending to be the USA Women's Gymnastics team, doing balance beam and cartwheels an' stuff. It was funnier than hell. I thought the guy doing cartwheels on the road was going to kill himself. I won't say he had no talent, but I don't think he could have made the team, if you catch my drift. The guys doing balance beam piroettes on the road were safer. I nearly crashed my bike for laughing.

There were a few more things

But I forget.

OH!

New puppy hasn't peed or shit inside for a while, and the garden actually gave us some giant "English" cucumbers. I've never had any luck with cucumbers until this very year. Also, lots of cherry tomatoes.

It's not that bad.  I've seen stores that are far worse.  Sure, the flash blocks their stupid AJAX menus in Firefox, but that's pretty much par for the course.

Ugarte in Casablanca, "I don't hate K5. I don't think nothin about it."  Actually I feel about it the way my mother must feel about her home town in Scotland, which she remembers from her childhood as a pleasant place on the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. She left right after the war, came to America, married a Yank, had 7 kids, went from poor to prosperous. Then after 30 years went back to her home town. It was a slum and full of junkies and drunks.

I haven't been on K5 in ages, but when someone mentions it it always reminds me of the simpsons scene where two kids are watching some event.  The script was something like:

Kid 1: That was awesome.
Kid 2: Are you being sarcastic?
-pause-
Kid 1: Dude, I don't even know anymore.

Whatever is on K5 these days I don't doubt it is much different.

WHRC by gpig (2.00 / 0) #3 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 01:07:29 PM EST
I sent them a CV on spec a while ago, they had the politest automated reply I've ever seen. In contrast, MBL managed to send a horribly rude non-automated reply.

(Incidentally, he didn't say anything like, "actually we need more people, like, tomorrow, do you know anyone?". I guess probably not ....)

Congrats on becoming a fireman and saving the internet!

Woodwell is a fascinating guy by johnny (2.00 / 0) #4 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 01:27:29 PM EST
He founded WHRC, and before that he set up the year-round research program at MBL. Before Woodwell went to MBL, it was only a summer institute, which meant that research projects were only 3 or 4 months long, which meant that it wasn't much of a real research institution at all.

As the founder and long-time director of WHRC, he plays a very circumspect role, so as not to trample on the toes of the people who are currently in charge. He is on the board of trustees, but says he tries not to say too much. "They tolerate me" is what he said. I think he's being over modest, but he is an unassuming fellow. I like him very much.

Kind of like the ex-minister of our church, I guess. I see her around town, but she says as ex-minister it wouldn't be proper for her to show up at an actual church service. Not sure that that makes any sense in her case, but I think it does in his.

Wow by gpig (2.00 / 0) #8 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 02:24:09 PM EST
A bit of a science hero then, though he sounds quite humble with it. I hope I get to hang around WH long enough to meet him ....

And yes, I can see how having "The Founder" hanging around could interfere with day-to-day stuff. A minister going to church, on the other hand, seems perfectly ok. I don't know, maybe she's worried she'd start criticising the sermons :)

I'm going to go back over to WH soon by johnny (2.00 / 0) #10 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 02:38:33 PM EST
to do some more videotaped interviews with him.

If you're free, maybe you could come along as a technician. I want to have one camera on me, one on him, and to have them both properly mic'd and well-lit. Basically I don't know what I'm doing, so having another body along might be helpful.

How long do you expect to be in Woods Hole?

Not there at the moment, unfortunately by gpig (4.00 / 1) #13 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 03:12:22 PM EST
Hoping to be back in a couple of months' time ....
